Salary Range: $156,400 - $225,000 per year, plus bonus eligibility

An organization specializing in food travel across North America is seeking an experienced Associate General Counsel, Labor & Employment. This position serves as a trusted legal partner, providing practical and timely advice on employment and labor matters across the U.S. and internationally. The role involves protecting the organization, guiding leadership through complex decisions, and fostering a workplace where employees thrive.
Responsibilities
- Advise senior leadership and human resources on labor and employment matters
- Develop and implement company-wide employment policies that comply with legal requirements and reduce labor risk
- Handle high-stakes matters including employee relations, NLRB proceedings, arbitrations, and negotiations
- Collaborate with various departments to develop and deliver employment law training
- Monitor labor and employment law developments and recommend necessary changes
- Provide legal representation and guidance for administrative charges, audits, investigations, grievances, litigation, and other adversarial matters
- Draft employment policies, agreements, and respond to subpoenas
- Build strong relationships across the organization, including with senior leadership and HR professionals
- Manage relationships with outside counsel in a cost-effective manner
- Recommend and deliver actionable KPIs and business metrics to drive results
- Foster a team environment that encourages empowerment, continuous improvement, and innovation
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school with strong academic credentials
- Membership in good standing with the Virginia Bar, or membership in another U.S. jurisdiction with eligibility for waiver into Virginia
- Minimum of 5 years of substantial labor and employment law experience advising on HR-related issues
- Strong knowledge of federal employment laws such as FLSA, FMLA, and ADA
- Experience working in a heavily unionized environment
- Experience drafting employment policies and delivering employment law training
- Ability to clearly explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers
- Ability to travel up to 20% within the U.S. and Canada, including overnight stays
- Eligibility to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and required airport security clearances (e.g., TSA, FAA, Transport Canada)
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house counsel experience
- Knowledge of ERISA and employee benefits
- Experience supporting clients outside the U.S.
- Experience in the food, beverage, or hospitality industry
