Overview

An organization is seeking an Associate General Counsel, Product (Payments) to provide legal expertise on financial and payment products. This role involves managing complex legal and regulatory issues, collaborating across multiple teams including product, partnerships, engineering, policy, operations, and compliance. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical and communication skills, business acumen, and the ability to work independently while exercising sound legal judgment and strategic thinking.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on payment laws, financial services regulations, data privacy, consumer protection, and enforcement actions related to existing and new payment products and features.
  • Develop strategic, long-term approaches for launching payment products and programs globally.
  • Assess legal risks, recommend mitigation strategies, and advise product, engineering, risk, and compliance teams.
  • Monitor and analyze new regulations in the payments and financial services sectors to determine their impact on payment products.
  • Support cross-functional efforts to engage with regulators and public policymakers on key financial regulatory matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience practicing privacy law, focusing on data protection requirements applicable to payments, financial services, or consumer financial data.
  • J.D. degree (or foreign equivalent) and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Eligibility to obtain registered in-house counsel status if required by the state bar in the assigned work location.
  • Active bar membership in good standing in at least one jurisdiction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with responsible, ethical AI practices such as risk assessment, bias mitigation, and quality and accuracy reviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate AI tools to optimize or redesign workflows and achieve measurable impacts like efficiency gains or quality improvements.
  • Ongoing AI skill development, including prompt/context engineering and agent orchestration, with awareness of emerging AI technologies.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $202,000 to $274,000 per year.
  • Additional compensation includes bonus, equity, and benefits.
  • Individual compensation is based on skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Location

  • The role requires active bar membership and eligibility to register as in-house counsel in the assigned work location within the United States.
