Overview

An Associate General Counsel position is available to provide legal support and guidance to a Real Estate Services team managing real estate interests across multiple business units within a large healthcare and well-being organization. This role involves advising on lease interpretation, negotiations, disputes, and a broad range of commercial real estate matters including M&A due diligence and deal term negotiations.

This position reports to the Senior General Counsel of Real Estate and requires strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. The role demands collaboration with legal and business teams in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.

Remote work is permitted from anywhere within the U.S., except for hires in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C., where a minimum of four days per week in-office presence is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal and strategic advice on all real estate matters to the Real Estate Services team
  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial real estate agreements such as leases, letters of intent, subleases, intercompany leases, estoppels, landlord consents, amendments, assignments, construction agreements, licenses, NDAs, options, deeds, and other related documents
  • Oversee commercial real estate transactions including leasing, sales, dispositions, and closing activities
  • Advise leadership on real estate strategy and operations
  • Interpret real estate agreements and provide sound business guidance
  • Manage and resolve real estate issues and disputes
  • Assist in reviewing, drafting, maintaining, and updating key real estate templates
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on legal and real estate topics to business partners and senior leadership

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to at least one U.S. state bar
  • Minimum of 5 years of commercial real estate legal experience
  • Experience drafting and negotiating commercial leases and related agreements across diverse real estate portfolios
  • Solid understanding of the commercial real estate industry
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively
  • Strong advocacy and problem-solving skills to achieve business objectives
  • Collaborative team player capable of working in a matrixed environment with attorneys and business staff at various levels
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence and poise in interactions with senior lawyers and business leaders
  • Proactive issue identification and timely advice with follow-through to resolution
  • Proficiency in creating and delivering presentations using PowerPoint, Excel, and other standard tools
  • Ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external contacts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Admission to the California bar
  • Experience in law firm or in-house legal roles
  • Ability to develop pragmatic, business-friendly solutions with clear presentation of risks and outcomes
  • Strong organizational skills, high emotional intelligence, and attention to detail
  • Experience in healthcare law, including knowledge of STARK and The Anti-Kickback Statute
  • Ability to prioritize work with urgency and agility to deliver high-quality, timely results
  • Compliance with telecommuting policies for remote employees

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $134,600 to $230,800 annually (full-time basis), based on factors such as local labor markets, education, experience, and certifications

  • Compliance with all applicable minimum wage laws

Location

  • Remote work allowed anywhere in the U.S., except Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. hires must work in-office at least four days per week
