Overview

This role involves providing strategic legal support to business leaders within a healthcare organization specializing in integrated pharmacy services. The position focuses on contract negotiation, legal risk management, and regulatory compliance related to specialty pharmacy dispensing and distribution.

The role reports directly to the Associate General Counsel and offers flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. However, candidates based in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. are required to work in the office at least four days per week.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on rights, obligations, risks, and privileges affecting the organization.
  • Protect pharmacy interests during contract negotiations and disputes.
  • Draft, manage, review, and revise agreements, statements of work, and amendments with pharmaceutical manufacturers, payors, pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), customers, data aggregators, vendors, and other strategic partners.
  • Review manufacturers' and vendors' consent forms, letters, telephone scripts, and other communications to pharmacy patients to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Advise leaders of integrated pharmacy businesses on regulatory and transactional matters.
  • Develop deep knowledge of the pharmacy industry and specific business practices to effectively counsel senior business leaders.
  • Support management of strategic projects involving multiple integrated pharmacies.
  • Assist compliance teams with responses to information requests from state Medicaid agencies and contractors.
  • Provide a full range of legal services, potentially specializing in transactional work, commercial law, contracts law, regulatory matters, and healthcare compliance.

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate degree with Bar admission in at least one state.
  • Minimum of 7 years of legal experience in healthcare regulatory and transactional practices, including a strong understanding of specialty pharmacy dispensing and distribution.
  • Experience advising business leaders on compliance with healthcare laws such as the Federal Anti-kickback Statute, False Claims Act, HIPAA, Medicare regulations, and state Medicaid laws.
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies including state Boards of Pharmacy, state Medicaid agencies, CMS, and state insurance departments.
  • Ability to understand business problems related to legal projects.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external contacts; capable of leading and contributing to teams.
  • Ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal actions to meet business needs.
  • Timely contract review and revision skills, including handling urgent turnaround times.
  • Ability to produce well-formatted, presentable templates and external-facing documents.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proactive project management, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Ability to provide concise, well-rounded answers to legal and regulatory questions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Over 10 years of legal experience in healthcare regulatory and transactional practices within managed care.
  • Experience working with state or federal healthcare regulatory agencies such as CMS, NIH, FDA, Board of Pharmacy, OIG, or DEA.
  • Business or legal experience with specialty pharmacy operations and/or pharmacy wholesale distribution.
  • Experience negotiating contracts with pharmacy suppliers, vendors, and technology entities.
  • Experience negotiating intellectual property rights, licenses, and restrictions.
  • Solid understanding of health insurance and managed care industries, especially regulatory frameworks for pharmacy benefit management entities.
  • Familiarity with legally permissible uses and required handling of protected health information (PHI) under HIPAA and state privacy laws.
  • Compliance with telecommuting policies for remote employees.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $134,600 to $230,800 annually (full-time basis), dependent on factors such as local labor markets, education, experience, and certifications.

  • Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. area hires must work in-office at least four days per week.
