Overview

An international nonprofit organization focused on improving health and well-being globally is seeking an Associate General Counsel. This role involves providing legal advice, counsel, leadership, and oversight on a wide range of legal matters including overseas employment law, government contracting, commercial contracting, risk management, and corporate governance in international operations. The position reports to the General Counsel and is part of a high-performing legal team.

This position offers a remote work option; however, candidates must be located in either the Washington, DC or Durham, NC areas. A cover letter is required for consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the legal liaison to organizational units and senior executives on legal, administrative, and management issues.
  • Provide legal advice and counsel to staff, including Executive Team members.
  • Manage outside counsel overseas.
  • Monitor relevant legal developments, draft correspondence, policies, and procedures to resolve legal, procedural, or administrative issues ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Identify opportunities to advance the organization and mitigate legal risk.
  • Lead cross-organizational efforts to support priority initiatives involving legal, operations, and communications staff.
  • Represent the organization in interactions with funding, government, and regulatory agencies.
  • Contribute to an organizational culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and commitment to social change.
  • Support management of the legal function and risk assessment.
  • Ensure proper filing of relevant legal records.
  • Engage in projects and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Supervise legal administrative staff.
  • Report directly to the General Counsel.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned, contributing to evolving team responsibilities.

  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor or international equivalent from an accredited law school.
  • At least 7 years of experience in a law firm, government, and/or in-house legal department.
  • Experience working in international contexts.
  • Validated legal expertise in two or more relevant areas such as overseas employment law, government contracting, commercial contracting, risk management, and corporate governance in international operations.
  • Prior in-house legal department experience is strongly preferred.
  • Licensed to practice law in one or more U.S. jurisdictions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • French language skills are a plus.

Compensation and Benefits

  • US-based hiring salary range: $150,000 - $190,000 annually.
  • Salary offers consider experience, education, internal equity, business sector, and budget.
  • Employer contributes 7% of monthly base pay to a money purchase pension plan.
  • Full-time US-based staff receive 18 days of paid vacation, 12 sick days, and 11 holidays annually.
  • Paid time off is prorated for part-time employees.
  • International salary ranges vary by location.
