Overview
This role is part of the Global Litigation area within an in-house legal team supporting the Claims Organization. The focus is on managing litigation involving allegations of bad faith and extra-contractual exposure related to insurance claims. The position involves providing legal advice and counsel on complex claims and litigation matters, working closely with internal teams and outside counsel.
Responsibilities
- Oversee first and third-party claims involving heightened exposure, complex extra-contractual issues, bad faith, and major litigation related to insurance claims.
- Conduct extra-contractual legal and factual analysis.
- Advise the Claims Organization on extra-contractual and bad faith issues, including recommendations for resolution and risk mitigation strategies.
- Prepare and present settlement recommendations where extra-contractual risk exists.
- Collaborate with outside counsel and Claims Organization on oversight of high exposure and complex litigation claims.
- Work with business colleagues and other in-house legal teams to develop and implement claims handling recommendations.
- Provide advice on litigation strategies and emerging legal issues and risks.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- Active membership in good standing with the state bar of practice.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in insurance defense, either in a law firm or in-house legal department.
- Experience managing or litigating bad faith or extra-contractual allegations.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, research, and writing skills.
- Project management and law firm/vendor management experience.
- Ability to interact with all levels of personnel and oversee junior team members.
- Proficiency with MS Office and legal research tools such as LexisNexis.
Preferred Skills
- Expertise in bad faith litigation, bodily injury claims, client strategy, insurance bad faith, litigation strategy, and property & casualty insurance.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position does not have supervisory duties.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $130,000 to $180,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
- Background investigation required for candidates offered the position.
