Overview

A leading vertical software and insurance platform focused on homeowners insurance is seeking a Corporate Counsel, Claims Litigation. This role supports the company’s insurance operations by managing litigation primarily involving first-party property claims and related bad faith matters. The position is remote but requires the candidate to be based in Houston, Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of first-party insurance lawsuits, primarily in Texas.
  • Enforce outside counsel guidelines and oversee discovery strategy and motion practice.
  • Track and control outside counsel budgets and billing.
  • Monitor performance metrics and cycle times; identify cost-containment opportunities.
  • Personally handle smaller or strategically important first-party disputes, including coverage disputes, breach of contract claims, and bad faith allegations.
  • Draft pleadings, dispositive motions, and settlement agreements as appropriate.
  • Appear in court when necessary.
  • Provide regular reporting to legal and leadership teams on litigation trends, reserve adequacy, emerging legal risks, and adverse verdict exposure.
  • Advise senior leadership on legal risks and develop litigation strategy in partnership with claims leadership.
  • Monitor and analyze changes in laws, regulations, and industry trends, advising leadership accordingly.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active Texas Bar license in good standing.
  • Minimum of 8 years of litigation experience in law firm, government, and/or in-house roles.
  • Demonstrated experience handling bad faith or extra-contractual litigation against insurance companies.
  • First or second chair trial and/or appellate experience.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage outside counsel.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with claims operations.
  • Strong understanding of Texas civil procedure.
  • Experience with mediations and settlement negotiations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders.
  • Outstanding judgment and integrity with the ability to work independently.
  • Flexible, solution-oriented, and collaborative mindset.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships across the organization.
  • Must be locally based in the Houston, Texas area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing risk-based recommendations and assessing exposure.

  • Salary range: $157,500 to $180,000 annually, dependent on experience, skills, and location.
