Overview
This role supports a small, fast-paced legal department as a legal generalist with a strong emphasis on intellectual property, brand protection, licensing, and marketing matters. The position interacts routinely with business stakeholders and provides legal guidance across the organization.
The job requires a permanent remote office located within a 4-hour drive or 2-hour flight to the Atlanta, GA headquarters, and the ability to travel as needed (approximately 10%).
Responsibilities
- Manage trademark and copyright portfolios across multiple brands, including:
- Conducting clearance reviews
- Preparing, filing, and maintaining US trademark and copyright applications and registrations
- Coordinating foreign filings through local counsel
- Advising design and creative teams on protection of prints, artwork, and product designs
- Protect and enforce intellectual property rights, including:
- Infringement and counterfeiting matters
- Online marketplace takedowns
- Cease-and-desist correspondence
- Contested proceedings
- Draft, review, analyze, and negotiate commercial contracts, including:
- General services, consulting, IP licensing, and brand collaboration agreements
- Technology-related agreements
- Support marketing compliance, including:
- Reviewing marketing collateral
- Negotiating agreements with promotional partners, influencers, and talent
- Advising on marketing initiatives and promotions
- Assist with managing pending and open litigation matters and other claims internally and with outside counsel
- Provide advice on a wide range of legal matters and develop expertise in new areas of law as needed to support business teams
- Collaborate with the legal team on brand and corporate legal issues
- Develop a strong knowledge of business operations and products
- Provide generalist legal support and handle a wide variety of compliance and legal matters
Requirements
- J.D. from top law school with strong academic credentials
- 5+ years’ experience (law firm experience required; in-house experience a plus but not a prerequisite)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Highly analytical with excellent problem-solving skills
- Detail oriented; able to manage multiple tasks and work well under pressure
- Strong commercial judgment
- Superb interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with employees and management at all levels
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Maturity, initiative, energy, adaptability, and a strong desire to learn the business
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in one or more of the following practice areas:
- General commercial contracts
- Privacy compliance
- Ecommerce/technology/digital with an emphasis on marketing technology
- Retailing/consumer law
- Intellectual property (trademarks, copyrights and/or licensing)
- Real estate/leasing
- Litigation and dispute resolution
- Mergers and Acquisitions
