Overview

This role is for a U.S. remote Corporate Real Estate and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Attorney. The position involves providing legal support and guidance on commercial real estate transactions, environmental health and workplace safety compliance, and related business advisory services within healthcare, life sciences, or other regulated industries.

Responsibilities

Commercial Leasing:

  • Review and negotiate complex commercial leases including retail, medical, office, and warehouse properties with a focus on healthcare compliance.
  • Advise on lease amendments, renewals, expansions, terminations, assignments, subleases, and landlord-tenant disputes.
  • Provide strategic guidance on lease risk allocation, operating expenses, common area maintenance (CAM), restoration obligations, use provisions, and remedies.

Real Estate Matters:

  • Lead legal support for real estate acquisitions, dispositions, and development projects.
  • Conduct and advise on due diligence including title, survey, zoning, land use, and environmental issues related to leases and real property transactions.
  • Manage outside counsel and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Environmental Health & Safety (EHS):

  • Advise business leaders on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental health and workplace safety laws and regulations.
  • Provide legal guidance on the development, interpretation, and enforcement of EHS policies, standards, training programs, and incident response protocols.
  • Support investigations, audits, and regulatory inquiries involving workplace safety incidents, environmental exposure, or health-related claims.

Advisory & Business Support:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to business teams on real estate strategy, risk, and deal structuring.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with finance, facilities, operations, and executive leadership.
  • Develop and maintain templates, playbooks, and best practices for a portfolio of over 3,000 U.S. leases.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • At least 5 years of combined experience in commercial real estate and EHS law within healthcare, life sciences, or other regulated industries.
  • Active admission and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, with ability to obtain additional licensure if required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience reviewing and negotiating commercial leases, including amendments and renewals.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience supporting real estate transactions and due diligence activities.
  • At least 2 years of experience advising on compliance with federal, state, and local environmental and workplace safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
  • At least 2 years of experience counseling cross-functional stakeholders on regulatory interpretation, risk mitigation, and business application.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Over 6 years of progressive experience in corporate real estate and EHS legal matters within healthcare, diagnostics, or life sciences.
  • Active North Carolina Bar license in good standing, with ability to obtain additional licensure if required.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading end-to-end real estate transactions including acquisitions, dispositions, or development projects.
  • Experience advising on laboratory, clinical, or highly regulated facility environments including safety and environmental considerations.
  • Experience supporting EHS programs, incident response, or environmental compliance initiatives within operational settings.
  • Experience contributing to environmental due diligence and/or M&A-related transactions.
  • Experience working across multi-site or multi-jurisdictional operations within complex, regulated organizations.
  • Direct involvement in internal investigations, audits, or regulatory inquiries related to workplace safety incidents, environmental exposures, or health-related claims.
  • Exposure to global EHS compliance frameworks and advising on multi-country regulatory requirements across multiple regions.

Additional Job Standards

  • Remote work flexibility is offered, with a strong preference for candidates based in North Carolina or other Southeastern states to facilitate team collaboration and occasional in-person meetings.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay range: $195,000 - $215,000 annually.
  • Eligibility for bonus under applicable variable compensation plan based on performance metrics.
  • Comprehensive benefits for employees regularly scheduled to work 20 or more hours per week, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, 401(k), paid time off or flexible time off, tuition reimbursement, and employee stock purchase plan.
  • Employees working less than 20 hours, casual, intern, and temporary employees are eligible for 401(k) plan only.
  • Employees on a 7 on/7 off schedule receive all benefits except paid time off.

Location

  • This is a U.S. remote position with a preference for candidates located in North Carolina or Southeastern states.
