Counsel - Austin, TX (Remote)

Overview

Counsel is responsible for defending lawsuits filed in Texas courts and handling first party insurance defense matters. This position is with the employer’s Staff Counsel group and is located in Austin, Texas, with remote work allowed.

Responsibilities

• Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
• Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
• Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including:
  • Depositions/examinations before trial
  • Examinations under oath
• Defend matters by trial or dispositive hearing, as applicable for assigned matters

Requirements

• 7-9+ years in related field litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury REQUIRED
• Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED
• Admission to the Texas Bar REQUIRED
• Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in Texas and meet and maintain licensing requirements, including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
• Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited to attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences
• Must be able to document files in a clear, concise, professional written manner understandable to customers, clients, co-workers, and other organization employees
• Must be able to follow complex instructions, resolve conflicts or facilitate conflict resolution, with strong organization/priority-setting and multi-tasking skills
• Must be able to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information

Preferred Qualifications

• Civil litigation experience
• Insurance defense-related litigation experience
• Must be able to communicate professionally in person, via telephone, and through written correspondence/email

Location

REMOTE. Must be within commutable distance from the Austin, TX site location.

Compensation & Benefits

• Annual Salary: $118,900.00 - $185,525.00
• The annual salary range is a general guideline; multiple factors are used to determine the final offer, including scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, work location, and market and business considerations.
