Overview

An organization specializing in utility-scale clean energy projects across California and the Desert Southwest is seeking an experienced Compliance Attorney. The role focuses on legal management and guidance related to compliance obligations for utility-scale solar development and operations. This position reports to the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and interpret federal, state, and international regulations affecting renewable energy technology, including environmental, energy, and safety regulations.
  • Enhance the risk framework to include a comprehensive compliance framework addressing regulatory, corporate, and business legal compliance such as data privacy and cybersecurity.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to develop mechanisms for detecting, reporting, and correcting compliance violations.
  • Prepare for audits and investigations by maintaining records and designing procedures in collaboration with relevant teams.
  • Draft, implement, and maintain internal compliance policies and procedures.
  • Conduct compliance risk assessments and audits across departments and projects.
  • Develop and deliver compliance training programs for employees and leadership.
  • Review and advise on contracts, vendor agreements, and customer terms to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Investigate compliance incidents and support remediation efforts.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and active law license, preferably in California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Nevada.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in finance and regulatory law.
  • Deep understanding of laws and regulations related to solar and energy storage systems, as well as general corporate compliance for privately held companies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of energy markets, trading mechanisms, and relevant regulatory frameworks such as FERC.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing debt covenants and financial requirements from a legal perspective.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex legal documents and regulatory requirements.
  • Exceptional attention to detail in reviewing policies, procedures, and documentation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities to develop and implement compliance solutions.
  • Project management skills related to compliance projects, audits, and investigations.
  • Familiarity with solar and energy storage technologies and their operational requirements.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $162,966 to $191,725 USD (California-based range; actual salary may vary based on location, skills, experience, and education).
