Overview

An opportunity is available for a highly motivated and qualified Attorney to join the Outside Counsel Partnerships (OCP) group within the Global Legal & Compliance Department's Strategic Counsel & Litigation Management group. This role involves working closely with national law firms on managed law firm panels, internal legal teams, and the Claims organization to provide advice and oversight regarding legal services delivery, litigation management, legal spend, and firm management.

Starting salary range: $155,000 - $188,000, based on geographical location and experience.

Work location: This position may require in-office presence depending on the candidate's location.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and recommendations on all aspects of litigation management, including strategies to improve case outcomes and cost control.
  • Oversee performance of national firms and managed panels through scorecard assessments, KPI reviews, capability assessments, and action plan development to ensure legal expertise and adherence to best practices.
  • Manage panel composition by lines of business, venue, and expertise, including firm selection, onboarding, cybersecurity assessments, and removal.
  • Negotiate competitive pricing through rate analysis, Alternative Fee Arrangement development, and discount program implementation.
  • Consult on outside counsel issues, including complex matters such as legal malpractice, tort reform, legal system abuse, case mishandling, and independent counsel.
  • Collaborate with Claims, Underwriting, Global Legal, and other stakeholders on complex legal issues, panel projects, and strategic alignment.
  • Utilize metrics and legal analytics to advise strategy, improve legal service quality, and identify savings opportunities.
  • Interface regularly with employees and managers across various organizational levels.
  • Maintain high standards of legal and business ethics, litigation experience, and professional responsibility.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives within the Strategic Counsel & Litigation Management, Claims, and Global Legal departments.
  • Communicate and present effectively.
  • Stay current on legal issues and developments, particularly in defense and insurance litigation.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or L.L.B. degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the bar of at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a practicing attorney with comprehensive litigation experience, including trials.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in complex and routine negotiations throughout all phases of case handling.
  • Direct client and stakeholder interaction experience.
  • Ability to conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Strong understanding of business and firm metrics and analytics.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of insurance claims, operations, and underwriting principles.
  • In-depth knowledge of insurance defense litigation.
  • Preferred experience in litigation management, including oversight of attorney and firm quality handling of cases.
  • Commitment to maintaining current knowledge of legal developments.
