Overview
A leading organization in the cryptocurrency industry is seeking a Counsel to join their Litigation team. This role involves managing a high-volume docket of U.S. consumer disputes, including arbitrations, small claims, federal and state litigation, and customer complaints. The position requires hands-on legal work from intake through resolution and includes collaboration with various internal teams and outside counsel.
Responsibilities
- Manage a high-volume docket of consumer arbitrations (JAMS), small claims, federal and state litigation, and customer complaints across U.S. jurisdictions.
- Draft and file pleadings, motions, case strategy memoranda, demand responses, and settlement correspondence with minimal supervision.
- Assess claims at intake, evaluate exposure, recommend resolution strategies, and execute resolutions.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Customer Engagement, Compliance, Product, and Operations teams to identify causes of consumer disputes and systemic issues.
- Maintain accurate matter records in the matter management system and contribute to docket reporting and metrics.
- Coordinate with and supervise outside counsel, managing budgets, timelines, and deliverables.
- Assist with complex matters, class action proceedings, and ad hoc projects as needed.
- Contribute to process improvement and automation initiatives to enhance team efficiency.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, in good standing.
- Minimum of 6 years of litigation experience in a law firm, in-house legal department, or government agency.
- Significant exposure to consumer financial services matters, arbitrations, small claims, BBB complaints, customer dispute resolution, or similar proceedings.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to operate independently on a fast-moving, high-volume docket; highly organized and self-directed.
- Proactive and entrepreneurial mindset, using legal expertise to create opportunities.
- Genuine interest in cryptocurrency and digital assets.
- Experience using AI tools to enhance legal work.
Preferred Qualifications
- In-house experience at a fintech, cryptocurrency, or other high-growth technology or financial services company.
- Familiarity with mass arbitration defense, major arbitral forums (AAA, JAMS, NAM), motions to compel arbitration, and consumer class actions.
- Knowledge of consumer protection laws such as EFTA, UDAP, state consumer protection statutes, and privacy laws (e.g., CIPA, CCPA, BIPA).
- Comfort with legal technology and tools.
- Trial experience, including handling consumer arbitrations through trial independently.
- Experience working with outside vendors for e-discovery and expert witnesses.
- Experience in a remote-first work environment.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $110,400 to $220,800 annually.
