Overview
A leading organization is seeking a Data Privacy Counsel to join their Data Privacy department. This role involves working closely with senior management and the Global Privacy Office to administer an organization-wide privacy compliance program. The counsel will serve as the lead privacy attorney for North America and South America, responsible for creating, updating, and implementing privacy policies in these regions and coordinating with the global privacy program.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and interpret existing and new privacy laws, regulations, and mandates related to data protection, including employment privacy laws, in North America and South America.
- Partner with the Global Privacy Office and Corporate Legal Department to assess and implement legal and regulatory changes affecting the organization’s processes.
- Provide high-quality, timely legal advice on data privacy matters to internal stakeholders, offering pragmatic guidance on the application and impact of local privacy laws.
- Investigate and resolve issues of non-compliance with data privacy and employment privacy laws in North America and South America.
- Manage privacy-related investigations, data subject rights requests, complaints, and communications with data protection authorities in these regions.
- Participate in global privacy committees, providing legal and strategic guidance on privacy initiatives.
- Assist with privacy assessments and ongoing compliance monitoring activities such as Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs).
- Develop and review internal and external privacy policies and program documents for North America and South America.
- Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of third-party provider compliance with privacy requirements.
- Ensure compliance with data transfer regulations across jurisdictions.
- Provide legal counsel during commercial negotiations involving privacy issues and assist with security incident response.
- Promote privacy accountability through training, tools, and guidance.
- Assist legal colleagues with drafting and negotiating privacy, data protection, and security provisions in client and vendor agreements.
Requirements
- Law degree with admission to practice law; specialization or qualifications in Data Protection and/or Data Privacy preferred.
- Privacy or compliance certification such as CIPP, CIPM, or equivalent is desirable.
- Minimum of 4 years practicing as an attorney, including at least 2 years of direct experience providing legal counsel on data protection and privacy.
- Experience conducting privacy by design reviews.
- Knowledge of contract principles and privacy-related legal requirements in North America and South America.
- Experience interacting with data protection authorities in one or more countries within these regions.
- Ability to work remotely, self-organize, and manage workload and schedule effectively.
- Strong time management, prioritization, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and handle a high volume of work.
- Flexibility, teamwork orientation, and a hardworking attitude.
- Knowledge of a second language is a plus.
- Limited travel as required.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary range: $144,000 to $219,000, negotiable based on experience and location.
- Eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

- Remote work arrangement with limited travel as needed.
