Overview
This role involves serving as Deputy General Counsel & Deputy Compliance Officer for a medical group focused on chronic kidney disease care. The position supports the organization’s legal strategy, compliance framework, and risk management efforts. It requires collaboration with executive and senior leadership to provide legal advice on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, employment law, contracts, and risk mitigation.
Responsibilities
Legal & Regulatory Leadership
- Summarize key legal and regulatory issues annually that may impact the organization.
- Identify and advise on complex legal and regulatory matters, providing strategic counsel to leadership.
- Lead negotiation of complex commercial agreements including payer/provider, strategic partnerships, vendor, and technology contracts.
- Oversee contract strategy, risk allocation, and business terms.
- Serve as subject matter expert on federal and state laws affecting the organization, including HIPAA and privacy laws.
- Support board and committee activities, ensuring compliance with governance requirements.
- Advise on employee relations, workplace policies, and employment disputes.
- Manage litigation matters and coordinate with outside counsel.
- Manage relationships with outside counsel as needed.
Compliance, Risk Management & Business Partnership
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive compliance program with policies and processes to minimize organizational risk.
- Oversee annual compliance training and update as necessary.
- Review the Office of Inspector General (OIG) work plan and provide updates to leadership; align compliance program accordingly.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to promote a culture of compliance and align security, privacy, and compliance programs.
- Conduct ongoing information privacy risk assessments and remediation.
- Manage privacy breach determinations and notifications under HIPAA and applicable state laws.
- Work with Medical Records to oversee patient rights related to protected health information.
- Lead compliance monitoring, audits, investigations, corrective actions, and risk assessments.
- Support internal audits related to compliance and risk mitigation.
- Provide compliance guidance and education to employees.
- Foster integrity, accountability, and ethical decision-making.
- Manage vendor intake, due diligence, risk assessments, and legal/compliance reviews.
- Maintain oversight of vendor agreements, renewals, obligations, and risks.
People & HR Partnership
- Partner with HR leadership on employee relations, employment law, and workplace policies.
- Provide guidance on employment practices, investigations, and risk mitigation.
- Support development of scalable HR processes and policies.
- Ensure alignment between legal, compliance, and people operations.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum 8 years of legal experience, preferably in healthcare, healthcare technology, life sciences, or other regulated industries.
- Experience reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements.
- Strong understanding of healthcare regulatory requirements and compliance principles.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate legal concepts into practical business guidance.
- Experience supporting healthcare providers, healthcare technology companies, or value-based care organizations.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state privacy and compliance regulations, including HIPAA.
- Technical expertise in interpreting regulations and implementing guidance in a corporate setting.
- Experience supporting HR, employee relations, or people operations is highly preferred.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize work effectively in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.
- Self-directed with strong initiative.
- Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills including optimism, diplomacy, responsiveness, and authenticity.
- Certification in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) or Healthcare Privacy Compliance (CHPC) is preferred.
