Overview
This role serves as the Deputy General Counsel, Employment & Labor, providing primary legal leadership and strategic advice on workforce strategy, employment operations, and labor compliance. The position is integral to talent strategy, clinical workforce models, and organizational growth initiatives within a healthcare-focused environment.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement global employment practices and workforce strategies.
- Design complex workforce models involving corporate employees, W-2 staff (telehealth and on-site), independent contractors (1099), and multi-state staffing partnerships.
- Evaluate employment and labor law implications related to corporate expansions, mergers and acquisitions, and new state market entries; influence decisions based on employment risk and wage-and-hour considerations.
- Ensure alignment of multi-state employment practices with clinical licensing boards and healthcare-specific workplace regulations.
- Lead enterprise-wide strategies for executive compensation agreements, restrictive covenants (non-competes/solicitations), and retention or separation programs.
- Serve as internal strategic gatekeeper to ensure hiring, compensation, and termination initiatives comply with state and federal laws.
- Assess and mitigate healthcare-specific employment risks including corporate practice of medicine (CPOM), whistleblower protections, background screening/OIG exclusion checks, and peer review processes.
- Oversee compliance with labor and wage laws including FLSA classifications, multi-state wage-and-hour compliance, pay transparency laws, and OSHA regulations.
- Manage a team of attorneys, paralegals, and employee relations professionals; foster a collaborative culture.
- Oversee outside counsel in employment litigation, administrative charges (EEOC, DOL, state analogs), and arbitrations.
- Direct vendor agreements involving professional employer organizations (PEOs), HR technology platforms, and talent acquisition vendors.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 12–14 years of legal experience specializing in labor and employment law, preferably combining top-tier law firm and in-house experience in a high-growth environment.
- Deep expertise in healthcare, telehealth, or digital health employment matters, including clinical/physician workforce nuances.
- Proven experience advising executive leadership and HR on enterprise-wide employment strategies and organizational restructurings.
- Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state employment laws (Title VII, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, ERISA) and healthcare-related workplace risks.
- Demonstrated leadership skills managing internal legal teams and outside counsel budgets.
- Exceptional communication and judgment with the ability to provide rapid analysis on employee relations and assess broader strategic risks.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $235,000 - $280,000
- Commission: Not eligible
- Travel: Up to 10% required
