Overview
A growing financial services and credit card company is seeking a Deputy General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership and support substantial business growth. This role involves implementing efficient legal review processes that balance rapid innovation with regulatory compliance and risk management.
Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a team of in-house attorneys, ensuring delivery of clear and actionable legal advice.
- Serve as a senior legal advisor to executive leadership on complex regulatory, corporate, and operational matters.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to establish legal review processes suitable for a scaling, regulated financial institution.
- Provide expert counsel on compliance matters, including federal regulatory practices and consumer finance laws such as FCRA, TILA/Reg Z, ECOA/Reg B, UDAAP, BSA/AML, TCPA, FDCPA, and relevant state laws.
- Advise on general corporate legal matters including entity governance, vendor contracts, and intellectual property as the business expands.
- Work closely with General Counsel, Risk, and Compliance teams to ensure alignment across legal functions.
Minimum Qualifications
- 10+ years of legal practice experience with a significant focus on consumer financial services regulatory law.
- 5+ years advising on federal and state financial regulatory practices related to banks, credit card issuers, or large non-bank financial institutions.
- Proven experience managing or supervising a team of two or more attorneys.
- Demonstrated expertise in general corporate matters relevant to financial services and technology sectors.
- Deep knowledge of federal and state consumer financial laws including FCRA/Reg V, TILA/Reg Z, ECOA/Reg B, UDAAP, and BSA/AML.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Current license to practice law in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Willingness to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior legal leadership experience in a FinTech or high-growth company.
- Experience managing regulatory or structural transformations, such as scaling governance or adapting to increased regulatory oversight.
- Experience managing state licensing programs, for example through the NMLS system.
- Involvement with industry trade associations on regulatory issues.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary range: $235,000 - $250,000.
