Overview
This role is for a Director and Assistant General Counsel specializing in Enterprise Risk Management and Environmental Compliance. The position involves providing legal representation and advice on complex environmental regulatory and enforcement matters, regulatory litigation, government rulemaking processes, and administrative law. The role is part of a dynamic, cross-functional legal team focused on managing environmental risk globally.
Responsibilities
- Manage complex environmental compliance and regulatory enforcement issues worldwide, including overseeing outside counsel and consultants, managing budgets, and coordinating with internal stakeholders.
- Represent and advise the organization in engagements with regulators on environmental issues such as regulatory submissions and permitting.
- Collaborate with legal, government affairs, and communications teams to mitigate risk through advocacy, including participation in rulemaking and legislative processes.
- Coordinate with litigation teams on environmental litigation matters.
- Provide legal advice on potential environmental regulatory changes and trends.
- Partner with business units, legal colleagues, and subject matter experts on environmental compliance and global regulatory risk.
- Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the global Enterprise Risk Management and broader Legal Affairs teams.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school (completed and verified prior to start).
- Minimum of 10 years of environmental law practice experience in private, public, government, or military settings.
- Admission to practice law in relevant jurisdictions or eligibility to become admitted within six months.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as in-house counsel handling environmental regulatory compliance and enforcement defense or as an attorney for an environmental regulatory or enforcement agency.
- Experience supporting regulatory advocacy initiatives, including participation in notice and comment opportunities and rulemaking challenges.
- Experience engaging with federal, state, and international environmental regulators and enforcement agencies.
- Familiarity with administrative law and procedures, including administrative hearings and permitting processes.
- Experience managing or coordinating large, cross-functional teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging with all organizational levels including business and department leaders.
- Strategic, practical thinker with the ability to manage multiple time-sensitive matters.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a collaborative approach.
- High integrity and honesty.
- A sense of humor, curiosity, and a drive for continuous improvement.
Compensation & Benefits
- Expected compensation range: $250,253 - $305,864 (base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible). Actual compensation may vary based on experience, skills, and location.

Location
- Remote work possible for candidates located more than 50 miles from the global headquarters in Maplewood, MN.
- Candidates within commuting distance to Maplewood, MN are expected to work on-site at least four days per week.
- Travel may be required up to 10% domestically and internationally.
