Overview
This is a full-time, exempt at-will position focused on legal compliance for a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving state legislative power and governance. The role operates remotely with occasional travel (5-10%) for in-person team meetings and events. Evening and weekend hours may occasionally be required.
Responsibilities
- Manage the creation and codification of legal guidance and training materials related to campaign finance, nonprofit tax, ethics, lobbying, and other relevant laws.
- Develop, design, and deliver legal trainings for staff involved in electoral and governance work.
- Maintain and expand legal guidance materials to address new questions as the organization’s work evolves.
- Provide day-to-day legal support by answering inquiries, reviewing and approving materials and contracts, and offering input on program design and execution.
- Collaborate with General Counsel and outside counsel to address complex or novel legal issues.
- Review contracts and manage other legal matters as appropriate.
- Contribute legal perspectives to internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws.
- Analyze risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Use surveys and meetings to assess and improve the effectiveness of legal support.
- Stay current on best practices for in-house legal operations and participate in team activities to promote equity, inclusion, and alignment with organizational values.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- Current bar admission(s) in good standing.
- 3-5 years of experience with campaign finance and state gift and ethics laws.
- Strong self-starter with the ability to manage time and tasks independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly collaborative with excellent communication skills, able to translate legal guidance for non-lawyers.
- Innovative thinker with a proven ability to develop strategic action plans.
- Demonstrated project management, research skills, good judgment, and creative problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in nonprofit or political organizations focused on state legislative or electoral work.
- Familiarity with nonprofit tax law and lobbying regulations.
