Overview
Full-time position providing legal counsel and support across all levels and parts of the organization.
This role helps ensure the organization’s operations are within the scope of the law and its governing documents, including its Bylaws and Delegation Agreement. The position supports legal risk management for activities related to the bulk power system in the West.
Headquarters are located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This position is remote eligible for candidates residing in the Lower 48 states. Travel is expected to be a minimum of 5–10% for this role, with possible additional travel based on business needs.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and support to departments and employees on a wide variety of legal issues.
- Support contract and procurement activities, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and other procurement documents.
- Provide legal advice on reliability standard development, compliance monitoring and enforcement, and reliability assessment activities.
- Advise on the identification, protection, and sharing of confidential information.
- Provide legal advice on governance consistent with corporate governance documents (e.g., bylaws, delegation agreement, rules of procedure).
- Support corporate policies, including drafting and reviewing corporate policies.
- Support enterprise risk and insurance activities.
- Provide legal support to technical and other committees.
- Provide legal support to audits of regulatory activities and in other areas.
- Monitor and analyze emerging policy, regulatory, reliability, and market rule developments affecting the Western Interconnection.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state.
- Minimum of three years’ experience as an attorney in areas related to utilities, energy, regulation, compliance, or a related field, or as in-house counsel.
- Strong background in energy policy.
- Experience analyzing and summarizing complex information for business and management audiences.
- Experience preparing reports, summaries, presentations, and briefing materials.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to interpret and synthesize complex policy, regulatory, and technical information.
- Strong written communication skills, including creating concise executive summaries.
- Ability to convey technical subject matter in understandable business terms.
- Strong research and information-gathering capabilities.
- Ability to identify trends, emerging risks, and strategic implications.
- Strong computer literacy and proficiency using PCs, including common applications such as those in the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Understanding of and adherence to sound principles of cybersecurity, including protecting sensitive information, using secure passwords, and following organizational cybersecurity protocols.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $111,200–$139,000 + discretionary pay + benefits.
