Overview

This role supports the organization’s mission to enhance the reliability and security of the bulk power system in the Western Interconnection by providing legal counsel across multiple functions and decision areas.

Responsibilities

The Energy Attorney provides legal advice and support to departments and employees on a range of matters, including:

  • Advising on contract and procurement activities, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and other procurement documents
  • Advising on reliability standard development, compliance monitoring and enforcement, and reliability assessment activities
  • Advising on the identification, protection, and sharing of confidential information
  • Advising on governance matters consistent with corporate governance documents (e.g., bylaws, delegation agreement, rules of procedure)
  • Supporting corporate policy work, including drafting and reviewing corporate policies
  • Supporting enterprise risk and insurance activities
  • Providing legal support to technical and other committees
  • Supporting audits of the organization’s regulatory activities and other areas
  • Monitoring and analyzing emerging policy, regulatory, reliability, and market rule developments affecting the Western Interconnection

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state
  • Minimum of three years of experience practicing as an attorney in areas of law related to utilities, energy, regulation, compliance, or a related field, or experience as in-house counsel
  • Strong background in energy policy
  • Experience analyzing and summarizing complex information for business and management audiences
  • Experience preparing reports, summaries, presentations, and briefing materials
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to interpret and synthesize complex policy, regulatory, and technical information
  • Strong written communication skills, including the ability to create concise executive summaries
  • Ability to convey technical subject matter in understandable business terms
  • Strong research and information-gathering capabilities
  • Ability to identify trends, emerging risks, and strategic implications
  • Strong computer literacy and proficiency using PCs, including working knowledge of common applications such as those in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Understanding of and ability to adhere to sound principles of cybersecurity, including protecting sensitive information, using secure passwords, and following organizational cybersecurity protocols

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range (full-time): $111,200–$139,000 + discretionary pay + benefits
  • Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, health reimbursement and flexible spending accounts, a 401(k) plan, and generous paid personal time

Location

  • Headquarters: Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Remote eligible for candidates residing in the Lower 48 states
  • Travel: minimum of 5–10% expected; additional travel may be required based on business needs
