Overview

This role is for an Energy Compliance Attorney working as a contractor in a remote capacity. The position involves applying legal expertise to support the development of next-generation AI systems by providing high-quality, domain-specific input. Prior AI experience is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive legal review and provide final approval on site control packages and interconnection compliance documentation for utility-scale energy projects.
  • Resolve escalated document disputes identified by Tier 1 reviewers, ensuring legal accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Assess project filings for alignment with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations and PJM Interconnection requirements.
  • Review permitting submissions related to transmission and generation to ensure full legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Deliver structured, high-quality legal opinions and findings in standardized formats suitable for client delivery.
  • Collaborate with project teams to address complex legal and compliance challenges throughout the project development lifecycle.
  • Monitor evolving federal and PJM regulatory requirements to provide proactive compliance advice.

Requirements

  • Active bar membership with a background in energy regulatory or infrastructure law.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant legal experience, preferably within PJM markets or similar jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated experience with PJM Interconnection processes, including site control requirements and queue compliance.
  • In-depth knowledge of FERC regulations related to transmission and generation interconnection.
  • Practice based on the East Coast, focusing on East Coast energy regulatory requirements.
  • Experience working at a law firm, utility, independent power producer (IPP), or federal energy regulatory agency.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience serving as lead or senior counsel on PJM interconnection legal matters.
  • Direct involvement with transmission developers, Independent System Operators (ISOs), or FERC in advisory or decision-making roles.
  • Familiarity with permitting processes for utility-scale solar, wind, or transmission projects in the eastern United States.
