Overview

A retained executive search firm is conducting a search on behalf of a confidential client for an Executive Vice President of Intellectual Property & Patent Strategy. This leadership role involves managing the global intellectual property portfolio and patent strategy to protect innovation and create competitive advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Own the global intellectual property and patent strategy.
  • Build and manage the enterprise patent portfolio across all regions.
  • Oversee patent filing, prosecution, and protection strategies.
  • Lead intellectual property risk assessment, licensing, and enforcement strategies.
  • Collaborate with R&D and product teams to protect innovation during development.
  • Advise the CEO, board, and General Counsel on IP strategy and risk.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in intellectual property, patent law, or IP strategy leadership.
  • Proven track record of building and protecting large-scale patent portfolios.
  • Deep expertise in patent prosecution, licensing, and IP risk management.
  • Experience building and leading global IP organizations.
  • Strong strategic skills to set IP strategy and make portfolio investment decisions.
  • Executive presence with board- and investor-ready communication skills.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree required; technical background or advanced degree strongly preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing IP portfolios across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Experience leading IP licensing or monetization programs.
  • Experience leading patent litigation or enforcement strategy.
  • Prior IP leadership experience in relevant industry sectors.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range: $475,000 to $625,000, commensurate with skills, experience, and interview performance.
