Overview

A rapidly scaling cybersecurity SaaS company is seeking a hands-on General Counsel to lead its in-house legal function. This role reports to the COO and serves as a strategic legal advisor to executive leadership while remaining closely involved in day-to-day business operations. The General Counsel will lead a small legal team and help the organization mature its legal and compliance posture as it grows toward category leadership.

Responsibilities

Legal Strategy & Operations

  • Act as a strategic legal advisor to executive leadership, proactively identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Assess the current legal and compliance posture, identify gaps, and develop a prioritized roadmap to address them.
  • Lead and develop the in-house legal team, implementing scalable processes and metrics-driven practices.

Compliance, Privacy & Risk

  • Build and execute a scalable compliance program covering data privacy (GDPR, CCPA), OFAC/trade compliance, anti-bribery, AI governance, and ethics.
  • Identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks across the business, embedding compliance awareness into daily decision-making.

Corporate & Governance

  • Manage corporate legal activities including governance, equity administration, and any M&A or financing activities.
  • Advise People and Finance teams on employment law matters across a global workforce, including hiring, employee relations, equity programs, and local labor law compliance.
  • Support board governance functions, including preparation of board materials, maintenance of corporate records, and management of director obligations.

Product & Intellectual Property

  • Provide strategic product counseling to product, engineering, and go-to-market teams on legal issues.
  • Direct intellectual property strategy, protecting trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets.
  • Advise on legal and regulatory implications of AI-driven features, data handling, and cybersecurity product capabilities.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of legal experience, including 4+ years in a leadership role.
  • Strong in-house background at an international B2B SaaS company.
  • Law degree and admission to, and in good standing with, the local governing body.
  • Proven experience building compliance programs at scaling companies.
  • Ability to communicate risk in business terms and drive cross-functional buy-in.
  • Deep understanding of sell-side SaaS contracting and experience with complex deals.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-functional collaboration skills across global teams and distributed environments.
  • Experience implementing AI tools and workflow automation to enhance legal operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel at a B2B SaaS company at a comparable growth stage (post-Series B or C, approximately 200–600 employees).
  • Track record of building compliance programs from the ground up during rapid scale.
  • Background in cybersecurity, data privacy, or regulated technology sectors; certifications such as CIPP/US or CIPP/E are a plus.
  • Experience aligning legal and compliance priorities with go-to-market, product, and marketing teams.

  • Salary range: $300,000 - $425,000 per year.

Location & Eligibility

  • This is a fully remote position with physical offices located in Sydney and Hobart (attendance not mandatory).
