Insurance Counsel

Overview

An Australian-based insurance organization is seeking an experienced lawyer with insurance sector expertise to join its Corporate Legal team. The role is suited to a candidate with strong commercial and insurance experience who can quickly get up to speed and thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide practical legal support across a range of insurance products, including private health insurance, professional indemnity, life insurance, disability insurance, and other financial products.
• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial vendor agreements in close partnership with the procurement team at a highly regulated insurance and financial services organization.
• Advise on product, distribution, and commercial matters, including reviewing customer-facing and marketing materials and advising on related regulatory requirements.
• Manage matters autonomously, apply the organization’s legal risk appetite, and deliver work promptly.

Requirements

• Around 7–16+ years’ experience, including in-house experience in the insurance or financial services industries.
• Experience advising on insurance or financial products, reviewing marketing materials, and counselling internal business teams.
• Strong commercial contracting experience, particularly in vendor agreements and procurement.
• Tech-savvy and responsive, with the ability to get up to speed quickly.
• Familiarity with legal operations tools: the team uses Claude and is implementing Checkbox matter management software.
