Overview
This is an hourly, remote contractor role for an Intellectual Property (IP) Subject Matter Expert (SME). The role involves reviewing AI-generated IP/legal responses and creating expert IP content. The focus is on evaluating reasoning quality, step-by-step issue analysis, and providing precise written feedback to improve AI legal reasoning.
Responsibilities
- Develop AI training content including detailed prompts and gold-standard IP outputs such as issue analyses, clause rewrites, checklists, policy guidance, and scenario walkthroughs.
- Evaluate and rank AI responses to enhance correctness, defensibility, clarity, and risk awareness.
- Test AI outputs for inaccuracies, misleading certainty, confidentiality risks, and bias; validate reliability across various IP scenarios.
Requirements
- JD, LLB, or equivalent legal degree with active bar membership or eligibility in at least one jurisdiction.
- Registration to practice before a patent office is a plus for patent-focused work.
- Minimum 5 years of professional experience in IP law (law firm, in-house, or government) covering one or more areas: copyright, trademark, patent, trade secrets, or licensing.
- Strong skills in IP issue spotting and structured analysis covering rights, scope, ownership, infringement/defenses, and remedies/next steps.
- Experience with IP agreements and workflows including assignments, NDAs, license agreements, work-for-hire, open-source licensing review, and creator/vendor contracts.
- Ability to assess practical risks such as likelihood of confusion (trademarks), substantial similarity/defenses (copyright), novelty/non-obviousness basics (patents), and confidentiality measures (trade secrets).
- Excellent attention to detail in identifying missing assumptions, jurisdictional pitfalls, overconfident claims, or unsafe drafting.
- Minimum C1 English proficiency.
- Ability to communicate complex IP concepts clearly and in plain language to non-lawyers.
- Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in an hourly, remote contractor workflow across time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with AI data training/annotation, knowledge management, legal editorial quality assurance, or policy drafting.
Compensation & Benefits
- This is a contractor role paid hourly.
- There is no immediate project available; however, qualified candidates will be among the first contacted for relevant future opportunities.
