Overview
This role is for the organization’s first lawyer in New York, advising banks, funds, and insurers. The position combines hands-on legal work with responsibility for turning matters into reusable, AI-native legal services.
Responsibilities
- Advise banks, asset managers, funds, and insurers on regulatory, transactional, and structuring questions across US and cross-border mandates.
- Run matters end-to-end, including scoping, analysis, memos, documentation, negotiation, and regulator-facing work.
- Serve as the trusted counterpart to general counsel, heads of compliance, and in-house teams.
- Productize legal work by turning each matter into a reusable AI-native service (analysis, precedents, and decision logic).
- Work directly with engineers to build tooling that supports legal work.
- Set the quality bar and review standards for defensible AI-produced legal work.
- Help stand up the New York practice, including structure, intake, precedent library, and engagement terms.
- Develop the client base with the founders, from first conversation to signed mandate.
- Bring in and mentor lawyers who follow you as the practice grows.
Requirements
- Admitted to the New York bar, with a clean disciplinary record.
- Several years at a leading US firm or in-house at a bank, fund, or insurer, with real ownership of financial-sector matters.
- Deep experience in at least one of:
- banking and financial regulation
- funds and asset management
- insurance regulatory
- structured products
- financial transactions
- Advisory and transactional by temperament.
- Commercial judgment—able to identify what clients need and price/scope work accordingly.
- Entrepreneurial mindset, with interest in building a firm from the first mandate.
- Native/fluent English and based in or moving to New York.
Preferred Qualifications
- Existing relationships with GCs or compliance leadership at banks, funds, or insurers.
- Cross-border experience with European financial institutions.
- Experience building something with AI (e.g., automation, agent, or workflow), not just using it.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary: $250K – $450K (New York)
- Bonus available
