Overview
A legal services organization is seeking a Staff Attorney to join their Legal Advice Line (LAL) intake team. This role involves providing legal advice and assistance to individuals and groups in Central California on a variety of civil legal issues. It is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level attorney to gain experience across multiple areas of law and develop skills related to intake processes and nonprofit legal service regulations. While in-person work is preferred, remote work may be considered depending on experience.
Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and appropriate legal advice and information to staff and clients.
- Monitor call flow, performance metrics, and case follow-up status for the Legal Advice Line.
- Review files for transfer and closure, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
- Review and revise advocate closing letters to ensure timely and proper case closure.
- Conduct initial applicant screening, perform conflict checks, and determine eligibility for services.
- Provide appropriate referrals for applicants who are not eligible for services.
- Maintain electronic client case files and deliver legal advice consistent with established guidelines.
- Assist the LAL Directing Attorney with research on complex legal issues and prepare internal memorandums.
- Participate in organizational projects such as client surveys to improve service delivery.
- Attend weekly LAL meetings for case review and substantive training.
- Organize and send correspondence and literature to clients as needed.
- Continuously improve legal knowledge and ability to provide high-quality assistance.
- Engage in community outreach as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Admission to the California State Bar.
- Ability to work in-person preferred; remote work considered based on experience.
Compensation & Benefits
- Workweek: 7.5 hours per day, 37.5 hours per week.
