Overview
This two-year legal fellowship is designed for an attorney who has just graduated from law school or graduated no more than two years before the Fellowship would start, and who spent the intervening time either clerking for a judge or in another fellowship or term-limited position. The role is focused on civil rights, immigrants’ rights, and/or racial justice.
The fellowship term runs September 2027 through September 2029.
Responsibilities
- Assist with all aspects of impact litigation, including investigation and fact development, plaintiff outreach, legal research, drafting and reviewing filings and correspondence, discovery, motion practice, and appellate advocacy.
- Work closely with legal team members and external partners and co-counsel to develop litigation with maximum impact on low-income immigrant communities.
- Collaborate with and support other departments within the advocacy department, including coordinating with policy and/or communications departments to use impact litigation to amplify policy advocacy, external messaging, and narrative change work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Recent law school graduates (0–2 years), with any time since graduation spent in a term-limited position (e.g., judicial clerkship or other fellowship).
- Bar membership or willingness to sit for next state bar required.
- Knowledge of and demonstrated interest in civil rights, immigrants’ rights, and/or racial justice.
- Prior experience working with and/or established ties to low-income immigrant communities and/or communities of color.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Values working cooperatively with others within the organization and in the community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in a foreign language (particularly Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese or Arabic) is desired but not required.
- Prior exposure to civil rights law, administrative law, immigration law, and/or habeas is desired but not required.

Location & Travel
- The organization’s office is located in Washington, D.C.
- Remote work locations are as follows: Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Maryland, Montana, North Carolina, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.
- To be considered, applicants must live in one of the work locations during the fellowship.
- Up to 10–20% of overnight interstate travel may be required, typically quarterly, to the Washington, DC office or another location within the US for 3–5 nights.
