Overview

A leading distributed retail mortgage lender with over 9,000 employees and more than 700 branches nationwide is seeking a Regulatory Compliance Counsel. This role supports the compliance management program by providing legal analysis and guidance on federal and state regulatory requirements related to mortgage lending.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal guidance on compliance risks and issues to support mortgage origination compliance and operations.
  • Support regulatory examination findings, consumer complaints, and inquiries by conducting research and assisting in response preparation.
  • Assist in developing solutions for regulatory findings, including root cause analysis and remediation.
  • Offer legal guidance on post-close suspense items to ensure timely clearing of conditions and meet investor delivery timelines.
  • Provide legal support for defects causing critical loan salability issues and coordinate corrective actions across departments.
  • Support compliance related to the use of technology in originations, including loan origination systems and proprietary technology.
  • Draft policies and procedures addressing federal and state regulatory requirements, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Serve as a resource for compliance escalations by providing timely legal analysis and practical guidance.
  • Prepare legal research, memoranda, and recommendations on compliance matters for senior counsel and leadership.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school.
  • 3-5 years of experience in mortgage lending compliance.
  • Knowledge of federal and state mortgage lending regulations, including Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, QM/ATR, RESPA, TILA, ECOA, HMDA, UDAAP, and SAFE Act.
  • Experience supporting compliance programs within the mortgage lending industry.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
  • High level of integrity and ethical conduct.
