Overview

This role provides legal support to attorneys handling moderate to complex liability litigation matters (including case work, research, discovery responses, subpoenas, and related activities).

This is a remote position for a strong candidate with a background in Workers Compensation experience in California, or the candidate can work from the Gold River, CA office (employees are required to be onsite one day per week).

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support to two attorneys
  • Draft legal pleadings, correspondence, and other documents as directed
  • Conduct legal and documentary research
  • Monitor case schedules and filing deadlines
  • Conduct interviews; summarize depositions; review discovery responses and medical records
  • Prepare discovery requests and responses
  • Subpoena, collect, and organize records from non-parties
  • Schedule Surveillance, Compulsory Medical Exams, and Site Inspections
  • Assist in trial preparation
  • Respond to inquiries and interact with customers, clients, counsel, and witnesses
  • Track billable hours
  • Organize and maintain case files and documentation electronically
  • Collaborate with attorneys, staff, claims professionals, and leadership to support successful business and litigation outcomes

Basic Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 4 or more years of experience in the Legal Support area, or
  • Associate Degree and 2 or more years of experience in the Legal Support area, and
  • Experience conducting electronic database research
  • Experience drafting legal documents, correspondence, and/or pleadings
  • Experience in legal support
  • Experience with Microsoft Office

Additional California Requirement (Paralegals only)

Paralegals must meet one of the following:

  • Have a paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program, or
  • Have a certificate from an accredited paralegal program with at least 24 semester units of law-related courses, or
  • Have a bachelor's degree or higher and one year of law-related experience under the supervision of a California-licensed attorney who has been practicing for the past three years (or an attorney who has practiced in California federal courts for the past three years).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate
  • Defense experience
  • Insurance industry experience
  • Ability to effectively conduct electronic database research, including Lexus Nexis
  • Comfort working in a paperless work environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to effectively draft legal documents, correspondence, and/or pleadings
  • Strong Microsoft Office and technical skills
  • Familiarity with litigation management software systems
  • Trial experience, including preparing trial exhibits and witnesses
  • Experience filing with the California Courts E-filing system
  • Familiarity with California Rules of Civil Procedure and local Rules
  • Experience navigating Clerk, Court, and Judicial websites

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay is based on role, location, skills, and experience, following local laws to ensure fair compensation.
  • Bonuses and merit increases may be available.
  • Proposed hourly rate: $34.86 - $45.67
  • Short-term incentive bonus eligibility: 5%
  • Additional benefits are offered for employees and their families.
