Overview
This position provides legal assistance to attorneys in all aspects of legal case preparation and file management. Responsibilities include legal research, analyzing statutes and judicial decisions, drafting complex documents, interviewing clients, attorneys, and witnesses, and collecting relevant case information. The role requires performing tasks with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
- Review and summarize medical and other records, preparing summaries of relevant information.
- Interview witnesses and confer with personnel in other departments and external organizations during research or legal tasks.
- Assist attorneys with complex caseload research, subject/topic research, and court case briefings.
- Provide advice and guidance on various activities and contracts, identifying complex legal or business issues.
- Support attorneys during complex or sensitive hearings by preparing notes, organizing, assembling, and filing exhibits.
- Draft settlement documents and other pleadings as directed.
- Perform other legal tasks as jurisdictionally permitted.
- Complete special assignments as requested by attorneys.
- Retrieve and analyze information from the Workers' Compensation website.
- Assist in preparing workers’ compensation files for hearings.
- Support docket management and case assignment under manager supervision.
Additional Responsibilities for Senior Level
- Handle complex legal projects with limited supervision, requiring originality and ingenuity.
- Exercise substantial latitude for action and decision-making.
- Provide leadership on major projects and may direct and train other staff.
- Conduct and oversee broad legal assignments impacting company business.
- Research, plan, organize, and conduct programs, seminars, conferences, and presentations to educate clients and personnel on legal matters.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies or Paralegal certification required.
- Continuous learning is expected.
- Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.
Experience
- Two to four years of paralegal experience, preferably involving civil liability or workers’ compensation cases.
- Prior experience with workers’ compensation claims is preferred but not essential.
Skills and Abilities
- Broad knowledge of judicial and administrative processes.
- Proficient in legal research procedures and use of law libraries.
- Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to work independently, multitask, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to handle confidential information sensitively and discreetly.
- Proficient with Microsoft Windows, including spreadsheet applications and Microsoft Word.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Working Conditions
- Office environment with no unusual hazards.
- Minimal travel required.
Compensation
- Estimated salary range: $56,210 to $94,270.
- Actual compensation depends on internal equity, candidate skills and experience, geographic location, market factors, and other considerations.
