Est. $190K – $285K/yr

Overview

This role involves advising product and engineering teams on legal matters across the product development lifecycle. You will work closely with stakeholders across product, engineering, data science, marketing, compliance, and sales to develop a deep understanding of the platform and to provide pragmatic legal advice that identifies and mitigates legal risk. The work is technical, and the role is expected to evolve as product and business priorities shift.

Responsibilities

  • Advise stakeholders across product, engineering, data, and marketing throughout the product development lifecycle, from early development through launch, including review of marketing strategies and assets.
  • Provide practical advice on regulatory compliance, consumer protection, intellectual property, artificial intelligence, marketing, and privacy.
  • Counsel teams on the design and deployment of core platform infrastructure and AI built on top of it, including platform and API design, integrations, and issues that arise when an AI system takes action on a customer’s behalf.
  • Counsel product, engineering, and data science teams across the machine learning model lifecycle.
  • Advise on identity, authentication, authorization, and account security, including consent, delegated access, and the legal requirements that shape access-control design.
  • Translate legal requirements into technical requirements: write guidance engineers can build against, and review design documents, data models, and architecture proposals.
  • Stay up to date on U.S. and international laws and regulations relating to the platform, including the shifting global AI legal landscape.
  • Navigate complex regulatory environments to support a smooth and compliant user experience.
  • Help build scalable processes such as playbooks, intake triage, and decision trees so routine questions resolve quickly and complex issues reach you early.
  • Partner across privacy, security, compliance, and other product counsel on issues spanning multiple teams.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited U.S. law school, and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
  • 5+ years of legal experience covering regulatory compliance, privacy, intellectual property, and consumer protection.
  • In-house legal department experience advising product, engineering, and marketing teams on development of new products, product enhancements, and feature requests.
  • Technical fluency, including comfort reading architecture and design documentation, reasoning about data flows, schemas, APIs, and model behavior, and engaging engineers and data scientists as a peer (computer science degree not required).
  • Experience with AI or machine learning issues, such as training data rights, model governance, or emerging AI regulation, and the judgment to advise on novel questions without settled precedent.
  • Experience with data-use and data-rights questions, including how aggregation, de-identification, and contractual commitments affect what a company may do with data.
  • Experience working with fast-paced technology or software companies.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain complex ideas succinctly and effectively.
  • A solution-oriented approach, with a customer service and growth mindset.
  • Ability to integrate into cross-functional teams with a cooperative, participatory approach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Not specified.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits programs intended to attract, retain, and motivate candidates.
  • Benefits are intended to support a healthy lifestyle with flexibility to meet changing needs.
