Overview
This role involves providing legal counsel on product and regulatory matters within the financial technology sector. The position supports product, engineering, and partnerships teams by addressing complex legal, regulatory, and commercial issues related to payments, financial services, and technology.
Responsibilities
- Advise product and partnerships teams on payments regulations, including money transmission and e-money, financial partnerships, payment scheme rules, data privacy, marketing, and monetization.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product, partnerships, engineering, compliance, marketing, and risk to support product development and commercialization.
- Draft and negotiate agreements with financial partners.
- Work closely with the broader legal team to support regulatory compliance, scheme rule adherence, customer agreements, and financial partnerships.
- Develop scalable processes for legal review and product launches.
- Draft, review, and update foundational documents related to payments products.
- Stay informed on US and international laws and regulations concerning payments, financial services, data privacy, and marketing.
- Act as a proactive business partner and trusted advisor to senior leadership.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate degree.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm, in-house legal team, or government agency, with a focus on financial institutions or fintech product legal matters and financial partner negotiations.
- Experience counseling product and technical teams on product development and deal structures.
- Strong understanding of technology and ability to quickly grasp complex business models and product use cases.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment.
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills with imperfect information.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with APAC-based legal issues and workstreams is a significant plus.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual base salary range in the United States: $178,200 - $267,200.
- Salary range may vary based on experience, qualifications, and location.
- Additional benefits may include equity, company bonuses or sales commissions/bonuses, 401(k) plan, medical, dental, and vision benefits, and wellness stipends.
Location
- This role can be based in the United States or Canada.
- Remote work is supported for locations 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from an office.
- Occasional office visits for meetings, events, and team gatherings may be expected.
- Relocation costs to a remote location are not covered.
