Overview

This role involves serving as Senior Counsel specializing in Patent Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The position supports research and development and business teams across multiple geographies, focusing on intellectual property matters related to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

The position can be remote or based in one of the following locations: Thousand Oaks, CA; Cambridge, MA; or South San Francisco, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with scientists to identify patentable inventions
  • Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide
  • Conduct prior art searches
  • Analyze patents and prepare freedom-to-operate opinions
  • Perform due diligence to support licensing activities
  • Negotiate and draft research agreements
  • Provide legal advice on various intellectual property matters to R&D and business partners
  • Assist with litigation-related matters, including challenging or defending patents in PTAB, opposition, and other forums

Requirements

  • J.D. or LL.M. degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction
  • At least 4 years of experience practicing intellectual property law
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 or more years of experience in patent or intellectual property law
  • Experience with U.S. and foreign intellectual property law related to biotechnology, gained at a law firm or biotechnology/pharmaceutical corporation
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in organic or medicinal chemistry
  • Strong analytical, legal drafting, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated management and leadership abilities
  • Client service focus with ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to prioritize workflow, meet deadlines, and manage complex projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with U.S. and/or foreign adversarial proceedings such as patent litigation, Inter Partes Reviews, Post Grant Reviews, and oppositions
