Overview
A global healthcare organization is seeking a Patent Attorney to support the discovery, development, and commercialization of small molecule pharmaceutical products. This role involves close collaboration with scientists, legal patent teams, and business leadership.
Responsibilities
- Draft and prosecute global pharmaceutical patent applications involving complex intellectual property strategies for small molecule therapeutics.
- Participate in developing overall patent portfolio strategies related to patent procurement and litigation.
- Analyze risks and develop tactical strategies aligned with business objectives.
- Advise teams and senior management on exclusivity, freedom to operate, contract management, and litigation risks in compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Communicate legal advice clearly to non-experts.
- Stay current with global laws, court precedents, and regulations relevant to pharmaceutical products and apply this knowledge effectively.
- Prioritize and manage multiple projects.
- Contribute to the implementation of new policies and procedures.
- Lead task-directed teams.
- Utilize AI tools prudently to improve work efficiency and foster collaboration.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, or a related field with sufficient technical background to engage with scientists and leadership.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
- Minimum of 5 years post-JD experience as a patent attorney in a law firm or industry setting, with expertise in small molecule pharmaceuticals.
- Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. state and authorized to represent clients before the USPTO.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States full-time without employer sponsorship.

Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $195,000 - $286,000, depending on education, experience, skills, and location.
- Eligibility for company bonus based on performance.

Location
- Position based in Louisville, Colorado or Indianapolis, Indiana.
- Strong remote candidates within the U.S. will be considered.
- Travel is minimal (0-5%) but may increase to 10-20% intermittently.
- Support provided to research labs globally, including sites in the U.S. (Colorado and San Diego), Spain (Alcobendas), and Indianapolis.
