Overview
An established law firm is seeking an experienced attorney to join its energy and public utility practice in Maryland. This role offers a first-chair opportunity to represent clients in high-stakes regulatory matters before the Maryland Public Service Commission and to engage with issues shaping the state's energy future.
Responsibilities
- Lead regulatory work including Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) permitting for solar, battery energy storage, and fossil fuel generation projects
- Represent clients in utility rate cases and other contested proceedings before the Maryland Public Service Commission
- Handle regulatory and policy matters such as Commission rulemakings and legislative initiatives in Annapolis
- Address emerging issues including interconnection, energy storage, community solar, and net energy metering
- Maintain substantial client contact and take first-chair responsibility in contested proceedings
- Contribute to shaping and growing the energy and public utility practice
Requirements
- First-chair experience in contested regulatory, administrative, or judicial proceedings
- Ability to quickly learn and engage with cutting-edge legal issues
- Collaborative work style within a multidisciplinary team
- Admission to the Maryland Bar or eligibility to waive into the Maryland Bar
- Significant experience in energy, environmental, and public utility law, ideally 6+ years
- Experience appearing before the Maryland Public Service Commission; experience before FERC or other state utility commissions is a plus
- No existing client base required; having one is a bonus
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in private practice, government service, or in-house counsel roles related to energy and utilities
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $150,000 to $225,000 annually, depending on qualifications and experience
