Overview
A Senior IP Counsel position is available for a remote role based in the USA. This role involves developing and executing a comprehensive global intellectual property and brand protection strategy, supporting complex IP matters within commercial contracts, and managing a robust patent and trademark portfolio. The position includes oversight of outside counsel domestically and internationally and requires alignment of IP strategies with global business and brand objectives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and drive a global intellectual property strategy focused on patent protection aligned with business, product, and brand goals.
- Establish priorities and frameworks for protecting innovations and brand assets across multiple jurisdictions.
- Advise senior leadership on IP and brand-related risks, opportunities, and strategic investments.
- Build, manage, and maintain an international patent portfolio covering proprietary technologies in online sports betting, casino gaming, user experience, platform architecture, and related areas.
- Collaborate with R&D, product, and engineering teams to support invention identification and protection.
- Oversee patent prosecution and portfolio lifecycle management, coordinating with domestic and international outside counsel.
- Develop and implement a global trademark and brand protection strategy aligned with business and market expansion plans.
- Partner with marketing, product, and regional teams to support brand development, launches, and campaigns.
- Educate and train internal stakeholders on IP best practices and invention identification.
- Monitor industry trends, competitor portfolios, and emerging technologies to identify opportunities and risks.
- Conduct IP landscape analyses and freedom-to-operate assessments in key markets.
- Assist with IP enforcement, licensing, and litigation strategy.
- Provide legal guidance on IP-related contract structure, risk allocation, licensing, brand protection, indemnification, limitation of liability, and other commercial terms.
- Collaborate with procurement, product, technology, finance, and business teams to support contract execution and protect legal and business interests.
- Identify and mitigate legal and operational risks in IP licensing arrangements.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
- Active bar membership and admission to at least one U.S. state bar.
- Minimum of 7 years of intellectual property law experience, with strong emphasis on patent work in software, gaming, or related technologies.
- At least 2 years of in-house legal experience preferred.
- Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) preferred; experience drafting patent applications is a plus.
- Demonstrated experience managing global patent portfolios.
- Familiarity with trademark portfolio and brand asset management.
- Experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements, especially involving technology, licensing, SaaS, or IP provisions.
- Knowledge of online gaming, mobile platforms, and/or sports betting technologies preferred.
- Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and communication skills.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with technical and business teams globally.
- Experience supporting product launches and software lifecycle management.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally.
