Overview

A leading online casino and sports betting operator is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel specializing in Intellectual Property (IP) to develop and execute a global IP and brand protection strategy. This role involves managing complex IP matters within commercial contracts, building and overseeing a patent and trademark portfolio, and safeguarding brand integrity across multiple markets. The position includes managing outside counsel domestically and internationally and providing strategic support on IP-related commercial contracting.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and drive a comprehensive global IP strategy aligned with business, product, and brand objectives, emphasizing patent protection.
  • Establish priorities and frameworks for protecting innovations and brand assets across jurisdictions.
  • Advise senior leadership on IP and brand-related risks, opportunities, and strategic investments.
  • Build, manage, and maintain an international patent portfolio covering technologies in online sports betting, casino gaming, user experience, platform architecture, and related areas.
  • Collaborate with R&D, product, and engineering teams to support invention identification and protection.
  • Oversee patent prosecution and portfolio lifecycle management, coordinating with outside counsel.
  • Develop and implement a global trademark and brand protection strategy aligned with market expansion plans.
  • Partner with marketing, product, and regional teams to support brand development and ensure consistent use of brand assets.
  • Educate and train internal stakeholders on IP best practices and invention identification.
  • Monitor industry trends, competitor portfolios, and emerging technologies to identify opportunities and risks.
  • Conduct IP landscape analyses and freedom-to-operate assessments.
  • Assist with IP enforcement, licensing, and litigation strategy.
  • Provide legal guidance on IP-related contract structure, risk allocation, licensing, brand protection, indemnification, limitation of liability, and other commercial terms.
  • Collaborate with procurement, product, technology, finance, and business teams to support contract execution and risk mitigation.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Minimum 7 years of intellectual property law experience, with strong emphasis on patent work in software, gaming, or related technologies.
  • At least 2 years of in-house legal experience preferred.
  • Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) preferred; experience drafting patent applications is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience managing global patent portfolios.
  • Familiarity with trademark portfolio management and brand asset protection.
  • Experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements involving technology, licensing, SaaS, or IP provisions.
  • Knowledge of online gaming, mobile platforms, and/or sports betting technologies preferred.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with technical and business teams globally.
  • Experience supporting product launches and software lifecycle management.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally domestically and internationally.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $180,000 to $210,000 USD annually.
  • Discretionary annual company bonus (eligibility varies by role).
