Overview

A technology company is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel specializing in AI and Technology to work closely with Product and Engineering teams. This role involves embedding legal expertise within the product lifecycle to facilitate the development and deployment of AI-powered features, focusing on practical, buildable solutions rather than traditional risk review.

Responsibilities

  • Translate legal and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable product and engineering constraints
  • Develop and implement AI governance frameworks that balance rapid experimentation with risk management
  • Lead compliance efforts for emerging AI regulations, including the EU AI Act, ensuring practical and scalable approaches aligned with product goals
  • Advise on AI system design aspects such as model usage, training data, outputs, and user-facing features
  • Manage legal strategy related to AI intellectual property, including generated content, training data, and third-party model integrations
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Data teams to implement privacy-by-design and safety-by-design principles
  • Draft and negotiate technology, data, and vendor agreements with a focus on enabling product velocity
  • Monitor AI regulatory developments and translate them into actionable guidance for product teams
  • Create lightweight legal processes integrated into existing product workflows, including PRDs, launch reviews, and experimentation cycles

Requirements

  • Deep, applied knowledge of AI, data, and privacy law with hands-on experience working on real products
  • Ability to engage technically with Product and Engineering teams and understand system operations
  • Proven skill in converting complex legal requirements into simple, executable guidance
  • High degree of ownership and autonomy, capable of making decisions and advancing work without complete information
  • Experience working in fast-paced environments where speed and sound judgment are critical
  • Strong influencing skills to drive outcomes without relying on formal authority
  • Preference for building scalable systems and frameworks over providing one-off solutions
  • Based in the US (Los Angeles or San Francisco) or Australia, with a hybrid work arrangement
