Overview
A leading technology organization is seeking a Senior Legal Privacy Counsel for North America to lead privacy coverage across the region and contribute to scaling a global privacy and AI governance program. This role requires a practical, business-oriented lawyer capable of translating complex privacy regulations into clear, scalable guidance. The position supports multiple departments including product, R&D, security, sales, procurement, HR, and operations across North America and Latin America.
Responsibilities
- Provide North America privacy leadership and serve as the primary privacy legal advisor for North America and Latin America, collaborating closely with corporate functions.
- Manage compliance posture related to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and advise on privacy risk decisions and operational execution.
- Advise on HIPAA-related privacy requirements where applicable, ensuring correct interpretation and application.
- Develop and scale the program’s operational framework, including creating documented playbooks for workflows, defining privacy metrics, and establishing reporting processes for leadership.
- Lead Latin America privacy support by coordinating with outside counsel and translating legal requirements into practical internal guidance.
- Oversee advisory functions related to adtech and marketing technology, including cookie and consent compliance and privacy reviews for marketing activities.
- Lead post-acquisition privacy work including due diligence and integration for North America and Latin America relevant targets.
- Draft, review, and negotiate privacy terms in commercial agreements such as Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) with customers, partners, and vendors.
- Partner with procurement to enhance vendor privacy due diligence, high-risk reviews, and data transfer impact assessments.
- Monitor and interpret regulatory developments and enforcement trends, translating them into actionable business requirements and execution plans.
- Develop and deliver privacy training and awareness programs to foster compliance behaviors across North America.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (JD) or equivalent law degree; admission to a US state bar or eligibility to register as in-house counsel.
- Deep expertise in CCPA/CPRA, other US state privacy laws, HIPAA, with demonstrated application in a global technology or SaaS environment.
- Proven experience building or scaling privacy program components such as templates, playbooks, governance frameworks, training, policies, and operational workflows.
- Strong experience advising product and engineering teams on privacy matters and supporting pragmatic risk decisions.
- Extensive contracting experience, particularly with DPAs and privacy provisions, supporting deal velocity with clear escalation criteria.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to provide clear, pragmatic guidance in fast-paced and ambiguous environments.
- Ability to work autonomously, influence senior stakeholders, and make sound judgments in complex situations.
- Excellent written and spoken English; proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with privacy tooling operationalization, including OneTrust or similar platforms.
- Expertise advising on adtech, cookie, and consent compliance topics.
- Working knowledge of US state AI laws.
- Experience advising on privacy issues related to AI and product development.
- Privacy certifications such as CIPP/US.
- Background in high-growth SaaS or global technology companies with success in scaling programs across multiple jurisdictions.
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range: $194,000 to $242,000, dependent on experience.
- Benefits include health, dental, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability, 401(k), and paid time off.
- Total compensation may vary based on candidate experience, education, and location.
