Overview

A leading insurance organization is seeking a Senior Manager to oversee multiple Staff Counsel office activities related to the defense of lawsuits involving insureds in liability cases, as well as representing the company in subrogation, Uninsured Motorist (UM), Underinsured Motorist (UIM), and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) suits or arbitrations filed in courts of limited and unlimited jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and supervise subordinates in all activities related to defending lawsuits against insureds in liability cases and representing the organization in UM/UIM, PIP, and subrogation suits.
  • Interview and approve job applicants; conduct and review associate performance appraisals.
  • Initiate or approve salary adjustments, performance ratings, and other personnel changes.
  • Counsel associates, take disciplinary actions, or terminate employment as appropriate.
  • Represent insureds in liability, UM/UIM, and PIP cases in courts of limited and unlimited jurisdiction.
  • Research laws and prepare legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda.
  • Provide opinions on liability, damages, and case value as requested by the Claims Department.
  • Prepare and handle pleadings, motions, discovery, depositions, examinations before trial, and other deadlines.
  • Train and supervise less experienced attorneys, assist as first or second chair counsel, and observe attorneys at trials and arbitrations.
  • Monitor bar requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE).
  • Provide feedback on file handling quality and expense management.
  • Review office reports and implement changes to improve office statistics such as timeliness, productivity, client and claims survey results, resolution ratios, and subrogation outcomes.
  • Adhere to the organization's Code of Conduct, policies, and operating principles.
  • Meet attendance standards to perform job functions and facilitate interaction with subordinates and management.

Requirements

  • Licensed in good standing to practice law in applicable jurisdictions and maintain licensing requirements including CLE.
  • Minimum of ten years of litigation experience, including insurance defense or personal injury.
  • Ability to travel as required for trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings, and conferences.
  • Ability to perform essential functions including thinking, reading, writing, listening, typing, speaking, bending, reaching, lifting, and standing for extended periods.
  • Proficient in using a keyboard, mouse, and multiple office equipment.
  • Professional communication skills in person, via telephone, and written correspondence.
  • Ability to document files clearly and professionally.
  • Strong skills in following complex instructions, conflict resolution, organization, priority setting, and multitasking.
  • Ability to learn and apply large amounts of technical and procedural information.
  • Demonstrated successful performance handling primary trial responsibility for cases of significant severity and complexity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Management experience is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary range: $144,525.00 - $248,050.00.
