Overview

The organization is seeking an experienced, registered patent attorney to join its legal department. Applicants should have at least 5 years of law firm or other relevant experience before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), with particular experience in administrative drafting and litigation, including ex parte reexamination proceedings and/or post-grant petitions (IPR, PGR).

A strong technical background is required, along with willingness to explore diverse new technologies. Experience with areas such as video codecs, coding, cryptography, compression, signals, wireless communications, or other algorithmic subject matter is a plus. Patent examination experience is also a plus. Clerking experience and familiarity with ongoing appellate issues affecting PTAB practice are also a plus.

This role requires strong writing and editing skills, comfort working both independently and within a team, and readiness to discuss the administrative matters the candidate has been involved in, including examples.

Responsibilities

  • Manage patent office proceedings internally
  • Draft, file, and litigate patent office proceedings (e.g., ex parte reexaminations)
  • Handle calls with decision makers
  • Draft motions and briefs
  • Support senior attorneys with management of ongoing matters
  • Support docketing, e-filing, deposit account, budgeting, and other IP functions
  • Edit colleagues’ work product and outside counsel work product
  • Provide amicus curiae drafting and support; provide comment drafting and support
  • Provide contract, licensing, and other legal support services
  • Perform legal writing, support, and other various legal duties

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of PTAB experience (drafting petitions, filing, litigating, deposition) or relevant reexamination experience
  • State Bar and Patent Registration Examination passage
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Patent Office examination experience
  • Algorithmic, codec, and other code-based subject matter experience
  • Semiconductor, analog and integrated circuit, and fabrication experience
  • Appellate and/or clerking experience
  • EE or CS undergraduate degree
  • Graduate Technical (MS, MA, or PhD) degree
