Overview

A Senior Preference Recovery Specialist position is available within the Recovery Services group. This role involves managing a fast-paced and dynamic segment of the business with opportunities for career progression into senior roles based on skill development and competencies.

The Specialist will play a central role in administering client work focused on data analysis and resolving matters related to Demand Letters or Complaints asserting preferential transfer causes of action under Section 547 of the US Bankruptcy Code.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a personal caseload while ensuring group responsibilities are completed effectively.
  • Interact with clients and support partner counsel in settlement negotiations.
  • Obtain and manage data, analyze data and defense analyses asserted by opposing parties or counsel.
  • Prepare independent data analyses in response to defenses.
  • Respond to communications including requests for extensions and information from adversaries.
  • Maintain case trackers and create/implement template responses.
  • Participate in periodic projects such as preparation and distribution of Demand Letters, filing and service of Summonses and Complaints, and preparing portfolio-level reports and analyses.

Specific tasks include:

Demand Letter / Complaint Preparation:

  • Collaborate with clients to obtain materials needed for defense analysis, demand letters, and complaints.
  • Manage research on corporate names, addresses, and registered agents.
  • Oversee preparation of Demand Letters and Complaints, including review of drafts and data merges.
  • Manage production and mailing/filing of Demand Letters and Summonses/Complaints.
  • Perform other tasks to facilitate Demand Letter/Complaint preparation.

Assigned Cases:

  • Support partner counsel in settlement negotiations.
  • Evaluate data-based preference defenses asserted.
  • Conduct or facilitate secondary analysis.
  • Coordinate responses to defenses with partner counsel.
  • Facilitate settlement negotiations and track receipt of settlement funds.
  • Report developments in assigned cases to direct supervisor.

Overall Portfolio:

  • Assist partner counsel in managing case communications.
  • Facilitate completion of secondary defense analysis.
  • Manage preparation and execution of settlement documents.
  • Coordinate with counsel on motions seeking approval of settlement agreements when applicable.

Case Tracker Maintenance:

  • Work with junior staff to maintain all trackers.
  • Schedule weekly or bi-weekly meetings to discuss issues with junior staff.
  • Ensure updated trackers are circulated at least bi-weekly.

Other Assigned Tasks:

  • Address all tasks assigned by direct supervisor promptly.
  • Communicate status on task completion daily or as directed.
  • Assist as needed in other areas of the Legal Claims Administration group.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; JD, MBA, or CPA is a plus.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a bankruptcy paralegal, bankruptcy attorney, or consultant with experience in bankruptcy matters.
  • Strong knowledge of bankruptcy law.
  • Strong data management and analytical skills; proficient in Excel.
  • Experience managing, prosecuting, or defending preference actions.
  • Familiarity with statutory defenses to preference actions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Salary ranges are determined by role, level, location, and market data. Individual pay is based on interviews and assessment of job-related skills, education, experience, and equity with other team members. Salary ranges are subject to change at the employer’s discretion and do not alter the at-will nature of employment.
