Overview

A leading educational technology organization is seeking a Senior Product Counsel to join their legal team. This role involves providing legal advice and support for product development and related business functions, focusing on areas such as data privacy, intellectual property, responsible AI, and compliance within the K-12 education sector.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary legal advisor for specific products, offering practical and creative guidance in a highly regulated environment.
  • Advise product and engineering teams on legal issues including privacy, intellectual property rights, data security, consumer protection laws (e.g., COPPA, FERPA, CCPA), and responsible AI.
  • Provide counsel on new features, product offerings, billing and payments, third-party partnerships, and integrations.
  • Support product-related communications from marketing, corporate communications, and other user-facing teams regarding product descriptions and disclosures.
  • Draft and update end user license agreements, terms of service, privacy policies, consents, and other legal documents for customers.
  • Offer guidance on intellectual property matters, litigation support, and other legal topics as they arise.
  • Coordinate effectively with external counsel when necessary.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in a law firm and/or technology company.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active good standing with at least one state bar.
  • Strong knowledge and passion for technology law, privacy law, and education sector regulations.
  • Practical, business-oriented problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex legal topics for business teams.
  • Proactive and adaptable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Commitment to making a positive impact in the education landscape.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with educational technology products.
  • Familiarity with responsible AI legal considerations.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary range: $200,000 - $220,000 per year, determined by location, skills, qualifications, and experience.
