Overview
Reporting to the General Counsel, this Assistant General Counsel role is a key position on a 4-person legal team. You will partner with operations and senior management to provide expert, timely legal guidance across a broad range of commercial matters.
This role supports an organization with legal needs spanning licensing, intellectual property and construction, data privacy, labor relations, merchandising, food & beverage, public and private events, non-profit/philanthropic activities, corporate governance, and litigation. The position requires proactive, solution-driven counsel that can effectively address business issues in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal and strategic advice across most areas of the organization, including IP, real estate, construction, entertainment-related agreements/issues, and litigation, with the ability to take ownership of matters end-to-end.
- Draft, review, and negotiate bespoke contracts and policies, handling commercial issues pragmatically—often without established precedent or templates.
- Deliver business-facing, actionable, practical legal advice to business teams and build strong cross-department relationships (including products and engineering, marketing, human resources, exhibition development, information security, and finance).
- Advise local exhibitions on employee and labor relations, local rules and regulations, and operational troubleshooting (including facilities, security, private events, retail, marketing, and liquor license-related functions).
- Assist with due diligence and discovery requests as they arise; help manage external counsel in litigation matters.
- Build and refine legal processes, templates, and policies as the organization continues to scale.
Required Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school.
- Active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
- At least 15 years of legal experience, including a minimum of 10 years practicing in-house at a media company across a wide array of subjects.
- Willingness to participate actively in all levels of work activity, learn new areas of law quickly, and operate effectively with limited supervision or established processes.
- Broad legal knowledge, including intellectual property, real estate, construction, corporate governance, data privacy, content licensing, and commercial contracts. Experience with labor relations and the USPTO is a plus.
- Exceptional drafting and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and succinctly across many areas and levels.
- High degree of professional ethics, integrity, and demonstrated gravitas; capable of earning the confidence of senior management and employees.
- Excellent judgment, leadership, and analytical skills, including the ability to anticipate legal issues and risks.
- Collaboration mindset—an enthusiastic participant in a collaborative environment supporting creative and management stakeholders.
- Demonstrated proficiency in time management and the ability to review and process large amounts of data.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with labor relations.
- USPTO experience.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation: Annual base salary range is $175,000–$250,000. Off-scale salaries and other components of pay may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Work Schedule, Environment & Physical Demands
- Full-time; hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Most employees work during PT and MT zones.
- Work environment: professional office environment using standard office equipment (e.g., computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, scanners).
- Physical demands: primarily sedentary; extended periods of sitting, working at a computer, and viewing screens. Frequent use of standard office equipment and occasional standing, walking, and light lifting.
