Overview

Reporting to the General Counsel, this Assistant General Counsel role is a key member of a 4-person legal team. The position provides expert, timely legal guidance across a wide range of commercial matters. The organization operates across licensing, intellectual property and construction, data privacy, labor relations, merchandising, food & beverage, public and private events, nonprofit/philanthropic activities, corporate governance, and litigation.

This role requires proactive, solution-driven business counsel who can work through business issues effectively and efficiently while providing succinct, clear advice.

Compensation

  • Annual base salary range: $175,000–$250,000
  • “Off-scale salaries” and other components of pay may be offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal and strategic advice across most areas of the organization, including IP, real estate, construction, entertainment-related agreements and issues, and litigation; take ownership of matters end-to-end.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate bespoke contracts and policies, addressing commercial issues pragmatically and often without established precedent or templates.
  • Deliver business-facing, actionable, practical legal advice; build strong relationships across departments including products and engineering, marketing, human resources, exhibition development, information security, and finance.
  • Advise local exhibitions on employee and labor relations, local rules and regulations, and operational troubleshooting, including (but not limited to) facilities, security, private events, retail, marketing, and liquor license-related business functions.
  • Assist with responding to due diligence and discovery requests as they arise; help manage external counsel in litigation matters.
  • Build and refine legal processes, templates, and policies as the organization continues to scale.

Required Qualifications

  • JD from an accredited law school and an active member in good standing of at least one state bar.
  • At least 15 years of legal experience, including a minimum of 10 years practicing in-house at a media company across a wide array of subjects.
  • Willingness to be an active participant in all levels of work, learn new areas of law quickly, and operate effectively with limited supervision or established processes.
  • Broad legal knowledge, including intellectual property, real estate, construction, corporate governance, data privacy, content licensing, and commercial contracts; experience with labor relations and the USPTO is a plus.
  • Exceptional drafting and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and succinctly across many areas and levels of the organization.
  • High degree of professional ethics, integrity, and demonstrated gravitas.
  • Excellent judgment, leadership, and analytical skills; ability to anticipate legal issues and risks.
  • Collaboration and strong partnering mindset supporting both creative and management stakeholders in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time management and reviewing/processing large amounts of data.
  • Resilient, focused problem solver and self-starter with ability to multitask and prioritize in a complex, occasionally ambiguous environment where processes may not yet be defined.

  • Experience with labor relations
  • Experience with the USPTO

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Work Environment: Professional office environment; routine use of standard office equipment including computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and scanners.
  • Physical Demands: Primarily sedentary; extended periods of sitting, working at a computer, and viewing screens. Frequent use of standard office equipment (e.g., computers, phones, printers). May require repetitive hand and wrist movements for typing and data entry. Occasional standing, walking, and light lifting (e.g., files, binders, office supplies). Requires mental focus, ability to analyze complex financial information, and sustained concentration to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Work Schedule, Travel, and Other Details

  • Full-time role.
  • Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Most employees work during PT and MT zones.
  • Travel may be required.
  • No supervisory responsibility.
