Overview

This is a US-based remote position for a Senior Counsel, Privacy to support a growing diagnostics business. The role focuses on providing practical legal advice on HIPAA and healthcare data privacy, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure responsible and efficient business operations.

This position is hands-on and consultative, ideal for an attorney who enjoys collaborating with business teams to understand privacy requirements, manage risk, and develop compliant solutions that support innovation and growth.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day legal advice on HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules, including guidance on Business Associate Agreements, Data Processing Agreements, and related documents.
  • Advise on the use, disclosure, and protection of Protected Health Information (PHI) across diagnostics, laboratory operations, and commercial activities.
  • Support compliance with CCPA, GDPR, and emerging U.S. state privacy laws, including projects and contracts involving consumer or non-HIPAA-regulated personal data.
  • Serve as the primary legal advisor on HIPAA Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification requirements, ensuring compliant use and protection of PHI across all business operations.
  • Support privacy incident and breach assessments, response, and remediation efforts.
  • Collaborate with Compliance, Information Security, IT, and Operations teams on HIPAA-related matters.
  • Act as a solution-oriented legal partner to product, commercial, research & development, and operational teams.
  • Manage legal matters within assigned business units, coordinating with external counsel as needed.
  • Identify and manage legal risks associated with day-to-day operations in collaboration with business units.
  • Translate privacy requirements into practical, business-aligned guidance.
  • Support contracts, initiatives, and projects involving healthcare data and patient information.
  • Educate internal stakeholders on HIPAA and healthcare privacy requirements using clear, accessible language.
  • Develop or contribute to training materials, guidance documents, and FAQs.
  • Stay informed about emerging privacy issues in diagnostics, digital health, and data-driven healthcare.
  • Support legal leadership on privacy topics beyond HIPAA as the business evolves.
  • Monitor relevant regulatory developments impacting healthcare data.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams and projects to provide legal insights and support.
  • Assist in overseeing regulatory compliance initiatives.
  • Track important developments in applicable laws across U.S. jurisdictions.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor degree and bar admission in good standing required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as a licensed attorney in a law firm or in-house legal role.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on HIPAA and healthcare privacy matters.
  • Working knowledge of CCPA, GDPR, and state privacy laws.
  • Background in corporate law or litigation; experience in healthcare, life sciences, or related industries preferred.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers and business partners.
  • Proven ability to evaluate risk with consideration of business and practical factors and to provide clear recommendations.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage workload under pressure.
  • Commitment to legal ethics and maintaining confidentiality.
