Overview
An established financial services organization is seeking a Senior Product Counsel to provide expert legal advice on innovative payment solutions. This role involves advising on complex legal and regulatory issues related to payments, digital assets, blockchain, and banking regulations. The position supports product development and business initiatives by partnering with cross-functional teams including Product, Compliance, Risk, Strategy, Marketing, and Communications.
This role is based in Scottsdale, San Francisco, Chicago, or New York and follows a hybrid work model.
Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States at the date of hire; visa sponsorship is not available.
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day legal counsel to the product team on all business-related legal matters.
- Interpret and apply U.S. and international laws and regulations relevant to payments, digital assets, blockchain, bank regulatory compliance, and privacy (e.g., GENIUS Act, National Bank Act, Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC/sanctions, EFTA/Reg E, UCC, UDAAP/UDAP, GLBA/Reg. P, stable coin and digital asset regulations).
- Guide business partners in launching, operating, and scaling innovative payment solutions compliantly.
- Support drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements including strategic partner, sales, and supplier contracts.
- Provide strategic legal counsel on new business initiatives and product development.
- Draft, review, and approve public-facing disclosures, disclaimers, terms of use, and other product-related documents.
- Advise on individual customer contract issues and design contract language aligned with business objectives.
- Serve as a subject matter expert during contract negotiations, audits, litigation, regulatory exams, and other legal proceedings.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments impacting product initiatives and collaborate on policy and process implementation.
- Coordinate with other legal personnel to ensure seamless business support.
- Manage and supervise outside counsel as needed.
- Potentially manage junior attorneys and other legal staff.
- Assist with corporate governance functions.
- Support risk management efforts and protect system and data integrity and confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school; admission to the Arizona or another State bar.
- At least eight years of in-house or corporate counsel experience advising financial institutions or financial services companies on consumer financial services and privacy laws.
- Ability to quickly learn new substantive legal areas.
- Strong expertise advising on regulation of digital assets (including stable coins and tokenized deposits) and blockchain technology.
- Significant experience advising on anti-money laundering, sanctions, data privacy, and consumer protection regulations such as Bank Secrecy Act, FinCEN guidelines, FATF recommendations, OFAC sanctions, GLBA, CCPA, GDPR, Regulation E, CFPA/UDAAP, and FTC Act.
- Ability to understand business needs and collaborate cross-functionally to mitigate risk.

Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise or working knowledge of international laws applicable to payments.
- Experience with foreign corridor digital asset and payments regulations, privacy, anti-money laundering, and economic sanctions frameworks.
- Experience representing clients before foreign bank prudential and consumer protection regulators.

Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range for Phoenix, AZ and Chicago, IL: $188,000 - $235,000 per year.
- Base salary range for New York, NY and San Francisco, CA: $226,000 - $282,000 per year.

Compensation is determined based on job scope, market rates, geographic location, candidate education, experience, training, and skills, and internal equity considerations. The pay scale is subject to change and does not guarantee specific pay.
