Overview

This full-time Staff Attorney 2 position is part of the Equal Access and Housing Practice Group, focusing on ending discrimination against people with disabilities and increasing access to housing and public/private programs. The role involves client representation, litigation, policy advocacy, and community outreach.

Location

Remote within California, with options to be based in Sacramento, Berkeley, Los Angeles, or San Diego.

Employment Details

  • Exempt, full-time, regular position
  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Salary range: $80,356.96 - $117,671.41 annually (based on experience and internal equity)

Responsibilities

  • Develop and participate in litigation including class actions, complex cases, and appeals related to disability rights.
  • Represent individual clients in negotiations, mediations, administrative, and judicial proceedings.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including legal services agencies and community organizations, to address systemic issues.
  • Expand service delivery to underserved populations through community outreach, workshops, and know-your-rights trainings.
  • Prepare and coordinate training materials, publications, reports, and presentations.
  • Mentor attorneys, advocates, fellows, clerks, and interns/externs as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the California State Bar.
  • At least five years of legal experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with people with disabilities and low-income clients, incorporating race equity and community lawyering principles.
  • Experience in disability-related law areas such as ADA Title II, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, FEHA, Unruh Civil Rights Act, Disabled Persons Act, or related statutes.
  • Experience in litigation, administrative practice, complex legal matters, or community organizing.
  • Proven ability to lead multiple advocacy projects including intake, outreach, administrative proceedings, writs, eviction defense, or individual client lawsuits.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities and/or multi-ethnic communities.
  • Familiarity with the disability rights or justice movement and extensive contacts within the disability community.
  • Strong professional responsibility, ethics, and ability to meet deadlines while managing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision.

Desired Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish, an Asian language, or American Sign Language.
  • Experience with or contacts in ethnic or language-distinct communities.
  • Understanding of race equity and community lawyering principles.
  • Ability to maintain positive relationships with diverse groups.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed in office or home environments and various field settings including courthouses, facilities, and community-based locations.
  • Regular communication via online platforms.
  • Ability to travel to meetings, training, and community events.

Travel

  • Occasional travel up to 25% of the time for out-of-town meetings, training, or outreach activities.
